Gloria Jean Cox
As a twenty-five-year-old with six young children, life for Jean Cox seemed a never-ending round of diapers, formula, piles of laundry, meals to prepare… and figuring out how to stretch the little money she had. She loved her children – there was no doubt of that – but the joy they brought her often was eclipsed by the overwhelming responsibility of trying to provide for them.
It was the birth of her fourth child, however, that changed her life most profoundly. A good baby who rarely fussed, Greg initially seemed to reach the appropriate developmental milestones. But as soon after his second birthday, Cox could no longer deny that Greg was “different”: he reacted negatively to loud sounds, didn’t interact with his siblings, and had no language skills, other than to make a noise that Cox describes as being “halfway between a scream and a grunt.”
At first, Cox received no help from medical professionals, who found “nothing wrong” with Greg and brushed off Cox’s concern with empty excuses. Eventually, how-ever, a doctor’s diagnosis gave a word to Greg’s unusual behavior and developmental delay: autism.
The book Through the Fog which tells her story will be available for purchase and Ms. Cox will be signing as time permits. The book shares the poignant, often heart – wrenching details of a young mother’s struggle to raise her family when one of her children is seen as “not quite right.”
Yet above all, it’s a story of Jean Cox’s strength, her abiding love for her family, and ultimately her triumph.
Purchase Through the Fog Book at the Tea & Cookies Book Signing. Gloria Jean Cox will be speaking and signing all books.
